A quick run-through of modeling simple shapes in Blender. (Sorry there are no numbers in the picture.)
Lets make something simple. Lulu’s necklace from Final Fantasy. This will take between 20-60 minutes.
1. Open Blender, delete the default cube, download the 0_figure.obj [link] , and import it into Blender. This will be our size reference. 2. Under Modifiers (wrench icon on the right menu), select Subdivision surface, and set the view levels from one to two. This will smooth out the hard edges on the figure model. 3. Create a cube from the dropdown menu, and make sure its xyz position is 0,0,0 in the scene. 4. With the cube still selected, go to edit mode, and scale it down to be smaller than the female's foot. 5. Go to the side view, and move the cube in front of the figure’s neck. 6. Pick the scale tool, and scale down the height of the cube a lot. 7. Now add 2 edge loops. Hold contr+R as you mouse over and a perpendicular edge. Once a new edge loop appears in the correct place, roll the middle mouse wheel up to make 2 equally divided edge loops, instead of just one edge loop. Click the LMB to finish the operation. (These edge loops will help flatten out the sides of the object once the subsurf modifier is added) 8. Go to the front view, and move the cube closer to the figure’s left shoulder. 9. Under Modifiers, select Subdivision surface, and set the view levels from 1 to 2. This will change the cube into an circular shape. 10. Go to the side view and make 4 copies and move and rotate them so as to follow the contour of the body. 11. Go back to the front view and note that they are all lined up from top to bottom. Rearrange them so that they make a curve. 12. Make a bead from a cube as indicated, and duplicate it. 13. Copy this pair of beads, and place and rotate them so they fit between the larger ovals. 14. Add a Mirror modifier, so that the other half of the necklace is created automatically. 15. Only add one bead next to the x-axis, since it will be mirrored
Could you explain how the Subdivision Surface modifier differs from the Multiresolution modifier - I've always been using Multiresolution just because that's what I've been introduced to (in a sculpting tutorial).
